Per Manufacturer's Literature:
Material presented to the drum magnet should be spread evenly over its surface, ideally in a mono layer for best results. A vibratory feeder achieves this effectively. The constantly rotating drum carries the material around the surface of the drum and non-magnetic material falls off in its normal trajectory due to gravity and centrifugal force. Ferrous metal / magnetic material is attracted to the drum surface by the magnetic field and continues past the discharge point of the non-magnetic material until it passes out of the magnetic field and then discharges due to gravity and centrifugal force.
Magnet system
High Intensity Rare Earth magnet (RE): This is recommended for a higher extraction efficiency. It has a very high intensity magnetic field and so will separate smaller ferrous pieces, more weakly magnetic material and steel with attachments of other material. It also separates general tramp metal as detailed above.
